As Lockdown III drags on and seems set to be with us for most, and probably all, of February it remains important to find things that stimulate us.

We may be biased, but at Step Forward With Lewis we believe running is the perfect antidote for the winter blues, lockdown blues and no doubt the moody blues too.

With that in mind, we are putting on another of our popular virtual races in February.

Part of the proceeds this time round will go to Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK, a charity which is particularly close to more than of our members’ hearts.

What’s the challenge?

UPDATE: THIS RACE IS SOLD OUT

In order to get hold of your medal, you will need to complete 28 miles in the 28 days of February.

As with all of our challenges there is no set way to do it… we don’t care if you run, walk, wheel or hop your 28 miles. And it doesn’t matter if you choose to do a mile a day throughout the month or complete all 28 in one crazy effort.

Equally, we don’t need you to send us proof that you’ve finished the challenge (you’re only cheating yourself, and besides, we trust you!). That said, we’d love to see pictures, Strava maps, etc of your runs so we can celebrate your success on this website.

How do I enter?

Entry costs £12 (plus £2 postage/packaging) and you’ll get one of our medals in return.

£5 of your entry fee will go to Scleroderma & Reynaud’s UK.

There are two ways to enter:

  • Fill out the below form including your payment details

*** THIS RACE IS NOW FINISHED ***

  • Or email us with your contact details – name and address – at stepforwardwithlewis@gmail.com and we’ll reply with details of how to pay via BACS.

There are a limited number of places so make sure you get in there quickly!

What is Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK?

Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK is a charity which is championed by one of our Steppers, Dannii Levi, so we’ll let her explain why it’s such an important organisation.

Dannii Levi Fartlek

I was diagnosed with Raynaud’s at the age of one back in the 1980’s when doctors thought this was something I would grow out of.

Further testing in my teenage years proved this was not the case, but the full effect on my life was not yet realised.

Raynaud’s is a circulation disorder, more common in colder climates where the blood vessels do not respond to extreme temperatures well, so essentially I would wear extra layers in the winter to try and avoid turning blue and loved, loved, loved the summer where I would generally be coping with the heat well.

As an adult the symptoms have increased and the condition manifests itself as no longer just a slight reaction to feeling cold. Pins and needles in my arms and legs became a daily occurrence, triggered by working in air conditioning, driving, temperature changes, stress and poor diet.

I was always quite an active person and had been told by doctors I needed to keep my weight down and exercise daily to keep my body functioning, but I got to the stage where I couldn’t exercise as I was in so much pain.

This is where SRUK came in. Some googling took me to their website where I was able to see how much research had improved and what type of medication I should be on to assist my daily life, as well as having a shop with specialised clothing.

As well being usually the coldest month in the UK, February is Raynaud’s awareness month, so getting out for a run is likely to be a big challenge anyway – but what better way to give back to the charity that changed my life.

Instead of living a life of pain, I am able to continue to live a normal life… just with a few extra layers!
