Get up and Go! is part of a falls prevention programme providing strength and balance sessions for older, frailer adults to improve their mobility and confidence.
In order to be part of this scheme, Michelle is a qualified OTAGO instructor. It means she is able to teach later life training to allow older people to avoid falls, maintain good health and remain independent.
For those wondering, the qualification is named after Otago University, New Zealand where the programme was created.
The scheme is backed locally by Northamptonshire Sport and West Northamptonshire Council, and can make a real difference to the lives of older people.
Falls after the age of 65 can be traumatic, and cause pain and loss of autonomy.
Clinical trials have shown that with the Otago programme, the number of falls in older people is reduced, and the injuries from those falls is also reduced.
The programme has the greatest effect in high-risk groups: those aged over 80 years of age and those with a previous fall.
